You may have heard some people saying that using squat type of toilets which is mostly common among Muslims may cause knee issues so it’s recommended to use sitting type of toilets.
But the fact is that using Islamic, flat or squat type of toilets has much more benefits that western and sitting type.
when we squat the position gives enough pressure to the intestines to push the feces out and the angle we sit gives a perfect position to the Puborectalis muscles to let the faeces move out smoothly.
That’s why the chance of Piles or Hemorrhoid, constipation and large intestine diseases is less among those who use flat type of toilets.
🔹Even the recent researches in western sources approve the efficiency of squat toilets in comparing with sitting ones.
🔹Plus the fact that in Islamic jurisprudence in the toilets Muslims are supposed to clean themselves with water and using toilet papers is not enough. So this job is much easier in flat toilets and it actually reduces the chance of splashing Nijasah on the clothes or other parts of body.
➡️Now what to do with knee issue?
Imam Reza (a.s) said: “Avoid staying long in the toilets.”
1- Eat according to a proper diet that you don’t have constipation so you stay in the toilets.
2- The gases in the toilets are harmful for the body as they can be absorbed through our head and nose. That’s why it’s preferred in Islamic jurisprudence to cover our head and nose when going to the toilet.
3- Don’t have Waswas and don’t be over-sensitive and super hygienic about NOT getting Najis and dirty in the toilets. It’s quoted that Imam Baqir (a.s) used to splash some clean water on his clothes before going to the toilet. When his companions asked him the reason he replied that it is to make him comfortable in case he doubts that any dirty water is splashed on his clothes in the toilet, he can assume it is the clean water he splashed himself. Of course this is to teach us not to be over-sensitive and over-hygienic.
🔹Hence first we should have a healthy diet so that we don’t have constipation. The feces should be as soft as cream like a toothpaste and the color shouldn’t be very dark or green in adults. In this case the whole process of defecation may take less than a minute that the intestines release the whole feces.
So sitting one minute or less on squat position twice or three times a day is not harmful for the knees but beneficial for the defecation system.
